The Initial Road To Safety, Part II
Brownsville Marine is a leading manufacturer of marine vessels located on the Monongahela River in Brownsville, PA. As you can imagine creating a safe work environment was a big challenge for a company that has hundreds of employees, complicated and dangerous equipment and large manufacturing pieces. Even with a leadership team that maintained over 200 years in combined manufacturing and maritime experience, they struggled in 2008 to maintain a culture of safety. Tim Scheib came on board as President & CEO in 2009 of Brownsville Marine and he immediately engaged in a safety program that helped keep the workers safe and more efficiency in the manufacturing plant.
When Synergy came into Brownsville they started their 8 point process to assist in creating the Synergy of Safety. Working hand in hand with the leadership of the plant they created a game plan to assist the organization in transforming their culture.
Step 1: Accountability
Brownsville Marine agreed that management and employees must take responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe work environment. Once the leadership team takes responsibility, the SOS team can get started.
Step 2: Behavior
After Brownsville’s leadership team was bought in, the next step was to make creating a safer workplace a condition of employment for everyone from the top down.
Step 3: Investigation
The SOS team helps train the supervisors on identifying the root causes of accidents and injuries. Additional training and accountability were put in place to assist the supervisors on relentlessly acting to prevent injury.
Step 4: Mitigation
When the Brownsville team received the best medical care, it was found that workers returned to work faster and in better condition. Synergy assisted in getting directly involved with medical care for workplace injuries.
Step 5: Engineering
The Synergy team worked hand in hand with supervisors and leaders to create the best practices of processes and workflows that strived to be efficient and effective in limiting injuries.
Step 6: Training
The partnership between Synergy and Brownsville next led to additional training on how to identify injury risk factors, investigate claims as well as mitigating accidents.
Step 7: Compliance
Once the entire operation was running smoothly, per requirements of the SOS model, Synergy helped the team maintain full compliance to create a safer work environment.
Step 8: Commitment
Today, Brownsville has full commitment from management, supervisors, and employees to maintain a safer work environment.
